Birds in Your Garden
February is a tough time for birds. Those that made it through this harsh winter will be desperately seeking food supplies which are running out in the wild. So while it is important to feed wild birds all year round an extra special effort is needed at this time.
Bird tables provide a secure environment for feeding and one with a roof also keeps the food dry. Keep bird tables and hanging feeders clean to avoid the spread of disease. You can use hanging feeders for peanuts, seeds, mealworms, suet pellets and blocks and fat balls. Avoid feeding birds bread as it is not very good for them.
National Nest Box Week runs in February, the time when birds begin their courtship rituals. A good quality nest box provides a safe, snug place for birds to roost and nest.
Place your nest box or boxes out of the wind, rain and strong sunlight and raise them off the ground out of reach of predators. To avoid damaging tree trunks strap the box to the tree. The box should have small drainage holes at the bottom. Do not line the box yourself; the birds will do this themselves.
Follow these tips and you will be doing our wild birds a big favour – and you will get to see them going about their daily lives.
